      What is Vocabathon? Vocabathon is a vocabulary challenge that helps improve cognitive and communication skills by expanding the knowledge of words. Preparation for the Vocabathon and Spellathon go hand in hand because they help students learn all facets of words, starting from the definition, spelling, origin, roots, and usage of words in sentences. The objective of Vocabathon is to enhance writing skills, improve reading comprehension, and provide a solid foundation as students prepare for competitive exams such as PSAT, SAT, ACT, and other competitive vocabulary challenges.  FAQs Q: What are the categories for Vocabathon? Vocabathon consists of 2 levels Junior Vocabathon : Grades 1, 2 and 3; Senior Vocabathon: Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Q: What is the schedule for Vocabathon? The schedule for Vocabathon includes onsite check-in, seating of students, explanation of  rules, followed by exam/test, evaluation of answers, and award ceremony. Q: What is photo/video release consent form? Our competitions are meant to promote academic excellence and recognize students for their talent and hard work. During our competitions, there will be pictures and videos taken which may be posted on our website. Students who wish to participate in our competitions will have to turn in a photo / video release consent form at the time of onsite check-in on the day of the competition. Q: What should students bring to the test?  Students should bring pencils, pens, and erasers to the test.  Q: What should I bring for onsite check-in?   You may either bring a printed or mobile copy of the registration ticket.  During onsite check-in, photo / video consent form has to be submitted, which is a prerequisite to participate in the competition.   Q: What will my child gain from participating in Vocabathon? Enhance writing skills Improve reading comprehension Build self-confidence and self-esteem Help lay the foundation in the future preparation for PSAT, SAT and other competitive exams Q: Can the previous champions of Vocabathon participate again in the subsequent Vocabathon contests?  The champion of Vocabathon of a particular category cannot participate in the same category again, however, the student can participate in the higher-level categories. For example, the champion of Junior Vocabathon cannot participate in the Junior Vocabathon again, but can participate in the senior category. Also, a student who has participated in the senior category, is not eligible to participate in the junior category of Vocabathon.  Q: Will there be study material provided?  The registered students will receive vocabulary word lists for preparation before the competition.  The word lists will be in accordance to the category levels of the students. The students are expected to study the words and look up and understand the definition of the words. It would be good for students to proactively study sentence formation for the words to help them in comprehension.  Q: Will the test consist of a written test/exam? Yes, Vocabathon will consist of a written test/exam  Q: Will the test be answer based or will it be multiple choice?  The exam/test will consist of multiple choice questions. Q: How long will the exam/test be?       Overall exam duration will be 1 hour, which includes 15 minutes for instructions. Q: What type of questions can we expect? Vocabathon’s questions will be tailored to the category, with some extra challenging questions. The objective of this test/exam is to give students exposure to vocabulary that will help them in reading comprehension, improve their writing skills, and also help them in their preparation for Spelling bees. Additionally, this will help set the foundation for other competitive exams such as PSAT and SAT. Q: What is the format of Vocabathon? Vocabathon will consist of a written section consisting of 30 questions. The contestant has to find the most appropriate meaning of the word. For the written exam/test, 15 words will be selected from the published list (this is the list of words provided to the contestants upon registration), and the remaining 15 words will be from external sources.  Q: When should the students arrive?  The students are expected to arrive 30 minutes before the exam for onsite check-in, seating of students, and explanation of rules. Q: Can parents be present in the room when the students are taking the test?  Parents will not be allowed in the room during the test duration of 60 minutes. Parents are requested to wait outside the exam room and pick up their children as soon as the exam is completed and attend the award ceremony after the grading is completed. Q: When will the award ceremony begin? Soon after the test/exam, the answers will be evaluated and the winners will be announced during the award ceremony.
