      An Afternoon of African American Spirituals Sunday, February 2, 2020, at 3:00 pmAn Afternoon of American American Spirituals in 60 minutes. The concert will feature works by the late H.T. Burleigh, Jester Hairston, William Dawson, of Tuskegee University, Roderick Bell and Leon C. Roberts and three congregational best-known hymns, “Were You There, Wade In Da Water, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Let Us Break Bread Together, Go Down Moses”, to name a new. A spiritual is a type of religious folksong that is most closely associated with the enslavement of African people in the American South. The songs proliferated in the last few decades of the eighteenth century leading up to the abolishment of legalized slavery in the 1860s. The African American spiritual (also called the Negro Spiritual) constitutes one of the largest and most significant forms of American folksong.The concert is free.
